MALAYSIAN Maritime Academy (Alam) has received a special funding of RM713,000 from Lloyd's Register to help boost its faculty capabilities to cope with the increasing number of students.

Alam chief executive officer M. Adthisaya Ganesen said the funding that was submitted through Lloyd's Register Education Trust was timely as the academy was in need to recruit more maritime professionals to cater for its swelling population.

“We have 670 cadets on campus right now and expect the number to increase with our next intake.

“Alam's campus at any one time can accommodate up to 1000 students and with the maximum capacity to enrol 550 cadets in each intake.

“Currently, we are seriously looking for professional maritime trainers and to take international candidates if the need arises.

“So, we are thankful that Llyod's Register has recognised Alam's vision, quality and success to actually contribute and partake in the development of producing qualified mariners.

“Not only financially, Lloyd's Register has also placed its president for Asia John Stansfeld in Alam's academic advisory council to actively participate in our educational and training contents,” he said.

Lloyd’s Register has worked with Alam in producing a “competence beyond compliance” Training Record Book for cadets and a fully comprehensive “Shipboard Trainers Guide”.

This makes Alam the pioneer college in providing for its cadets a fully comprehensive training system.

Also, Lloyd’s Register is working with Alam’s lecturers in providing training for specialised subjects.

In support of global maritime development, Lloyd's Register senior vice-president (marine) South Asia Andrew Easdown said they were pleased to support Alam as the institution was going towards the right direction of producing quality seafarers.

“We are very much in support and our Education Trust has the directives to provide and enhance a premier maritime academy such as Alam.

“For us, we viewed Alam as having all the world class capabilities in training for cadets and are pleased to be part of the team for upgrading the development of global maritime industry,” he said.

For 2006 - 2007 fiscal year Lloyd's Register Education Trust has committed to sponsor more than £4.5mil on global basis to qualified maritime academic and training colleges.

Alam, for instance is eligible to receive the funding after fulfilling the criteria of professional maritime training academy.

The announcement of the funding was made public on Saturday at Alam's 92nd Convocation ceremony which saw the graduation of 40 cadets receiving a Diploma in Marine Engineering.

The graduates were sponsored by MISC Bhd (12 graduates), the Public Services Department (JPA)(8 candidates), American Eagle Tankers (AET)(14 candidates), Global Maritime Ventures Bhd (GMV) (3 graduates), Yayasan Felda (1 graduate), Bahtera Marine (1 graduate) and one self sponsored student.

On commencing their career at sea, Adthisaya Ganesen urged the new graduates to live up to the industry's expectations by performing well at work and making proud the academy and nation.

At the same event, Alam also held the official launch of the Distributed Control System (DCS) Training Simulator which is another addition to the already advanced Simulation Centre.

The DCS Training Simulator was contributed by MISC Bhd and Yokogawa Kontrol (Malaysia).

With the addition of the DCS Training Simulators, Alam trainees are better equipped with the vital knowledge on how to operate the LNG Carriers sophisticated cargo and machinery systems, which is responsible for safe handling and transportation of very large quantities of Liquefied Natural Gas worldwide.
