jangan malu jadi melayu

The title is written in Malay, and "Jangan Malu Jadi Melayu" means "Don't Be Ashamed of Being Malay"

A poster I've been meaning to draw for a looong time, inspired by experience....

At a local Bruneian restaurant, there was an Englishman who ate just like a Malay (eating with bare hands instead of using forks,spoons or knives), and I asked him why he ate like that: "Wouldn't you prefer to have a fork or something? Why do you eat like this?"

His answer was simple: "Because I respect your culture. To be honest, I prefer using spoons and knives, but because I am in your homeland and not mine, I thought I should try living like one of you, at the very least in the way I eat."

Then, he continued:

" I don't get some of your people though... why do they deny their own culture and instead pretend like they were born somewhere else? If you can't be a Bruneian Malay in your own homeland, then where can you?"

I had no straight answer to his question... and he went on:

"I have heard Malay parents who say their children don't like eating traditional Malay food, instead preferring to eat Western-style meals. They dress in clothes alien to their culture, which isn't really such a bad thing, you know, your own choice in taste in fashion that I can understand, but unfortunately I've heard of people who laugh at those wearing the traditional 'Baju Melayu'. It saddens me to know that. To me, it was like hearing about an Englishman who doesn't enjoy tea or a nice game of football. So, answer me, stranger: Why do your own people look down on its own culture so much? Why do you some of you claim that eating with your bare hands is 'low-class' when your very forefathers ate like that for hundreds of years?"

I couldn't answer, because I don't know why either.

And to be honest, I'm not really someone you can truly consider 'Malay', considering my heritage. I'm part Arab, part African, part Dutch, part Chinese and only part Bruneian Malay. I just call myself Malay because I like being Malay... And I'm proud of being Malay. I love and respect Bruneian Malay culture too, which is why I try to put some Bruneian-ish influences in my works.

Trimester

I couldn't get a better picture... that shadow really bothers me. The messiness was intentional, though.

I walked by the spot the other day, it's already fallen off. It rained pretty much the entire 3 weeks after it was put up.

Spongebob and his band. Andy Paley and Tom Kenny asked me to do this artwork for possible inclusion in the upcoming and awesome Spongebob album. It was ultmately passed on by Steve Hillenberg, but Tom's going to buy the artwork from me anyway. Either way, enjoy!

The result of the Anugerah Biasiswa Merdeka '06 had been announced in Aug already & I only found it out till this month.............................. How lame I can be.............. Guess I wasn't elite enough at all.......................... *sigh*

& well... Guess I wasn't good or lucky enough 2 at least get a consolation prize Those paintings they made are far waaaaaaaaaay better than my this 1...

& also Mt Kinabalu, the highest peak in South East Asia... Tho juz a small tip there... O_o"

I was busy capturing images here and there of people, the beach the water and so on and i didn't realise that I actually have the perfect person to be in my images.

Self explanatory
It also means Tourism Malaysia. Yes I like to focus on the negativity of things. but that's what makes us realise it and so that we can fix it.
Those advertisements of tourism.. they're all true but they never seem to show the other side of it.
It stinks jus to walk pass this area.

People of Malaysia

Since its just after Merdeka (Independence) day for Malaysia, thought I'd put this in. The stylised malaysian characters was actually used for a book cover design. They're there to represent the many different cultures we have in Malaysia. There are many more races I should have put in there, just that time wasn't on my side.

I must be emo

And like every other ZADR fan I re-designed the boys emo. It all first started with "I MUST DRAW ZIM IN A STRIPED MINI SKIRT" and it escalated from there.

Dib has an emo comb over, and emo pants, and emo short shirt, emo glasses, emo piercings (that's a brow piercing there), emo makeup (or is that from lack of sleep!?). His hair is even so emo it pierces itself!

And like all the fan's and their cousin's dog: I gave Zim a new emo wig. The Irken will never escape PINK. Pink shirt, pink striped sleeves, pink buckles, pink eye makeup, pink contacts, pink sheen to wig? And yea, those are suspenders.

OHMWAGAWD.

I'm not sure what to think. 83 But I shall make your eyes bleed to at the sight.
